in the founder's words

“It was clay that helped me come out of that phase and find myself again.”

— Portarasan Subban, ceramist & founder · the story behind the studio's name, as told to DT Next

01 — The studio

Half garden, half wheel-room,
entirely calm.

Behind the Royapettah High Road bustle, the studio opens into a courtyard where a wooden bench sits among creeper leaves, and inside, wheels wait beside shelves of finished pieces. Reviewers keep arriving at the same description: a calming ambience you can “easily forget everything happening outside” within.

The teacher is the studio. Portarasan sir — ceramist of nearly 25 years — teaches foundations properly, then does something rare: he gives you absolute freedom to explore at your own pace. One of his regulars put it plainly: “It does not feel like a class at all. It feels like you are hanging out with friends, along with learning amazing things.”

  • Built for beginners — almost everyone arrives having never touched clay
  • Date-visit famous — anniversaries, birthdays, friends' Sundays
  • Made to order — home install projects & custom pieces

02 — The work

Modern ceramics with dirt still under its nails.

A blue-and-white ceramic bowl with red drip glaze beside orchids
Drip glaze, the studio favourite
A cracked-celadon ceramic turtle sculpture
Celadon turtle — sculpture, one of a kind
A hand holding a raku bowl of pink, green and blue glaze in the garden
Fresh from the kiln, out in the garden

Wheel-thrown ware, hand-built vases, leaf-pressed plates, ceramic florals and sculpture — the studio makes modern ceramics and functional objects meant to enter daily life, “carrying an emotional connection beyond their function.”

03 — Learning

Sit at the wheel. ₹1,500.

One session is enough to get hooked. A private pottery workshop runs about two hours — clay, tools, guidance and your own piece to keep — at ~₹1,500 per person, strictly on prior booking. Bring a friend, a partner, your father on his birthday, or nobody but yourself.

The sessions are structured but gentle: a demonstration, then your hands on the clay, mistakes included. First-timers make bowls; those who return move on to courses and, eventually, their own projects under the gurukkal's stubborn encouragement.

Sessions run daily — see timings, then call to hold your seat
